During the ADAC GT Masters at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, the Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing Teams had a rather patchy start of the season: the race on Saturday brought a pair of top ten results by Marvin Dienst (GER) and Aidan Read (AUS), who finished in fifth place with the #36 Schütz Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3, and Maximilian Götz (GER) and Indy Dontje (NED) of the MANN-FILTER Team HTP Motorsport, who concluded an entertaining recovery in ninth place. In the race on Sunday, Götz/Dontje drove the #47 Mercedes-AMG GT3 to eighth place, scoring further championship points in the super sports car league.

  • Race 1: pole position, two top ten results and a Junior podium
  • Race 2: 8th place for #47 MANN-FILTER Team HTP Motorsport

Oschersleben – Fans in the Magdeburger Börde region got to see a thrilling season opener of this year’s ADAC GT Masters. A turbulent qualifying preceded the first race of the season on Saturday: Marvin Dienst, who took to the track with the #36 Schütz Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 at an early stage already, posted the fastest time. Soon after that, several accidents hardly allowed for any clean laps to be completed anymore. The cars that were affected also included the #47 MANN-FILTER Team HTP Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3 with Götz and Dontje, who only ended up in 23rd place on the grid as a result.

In the race, Dienst defended his pole position and handed the car to his teammate Aidan Read while in the lead. A few minutes before the end of the one-hour race, a downpour caused an upset: at the track that was soaked immediately, Read was unable to withstand the pressure from his rivals and dropped back. The Australian crossed the finish line in fifth place, which also meant third place in the Junior classification (drivers under 25 years) for Dienst/Read. Meanwhile, Götz showed an excellent performance with the #47 car: having taken over from Dontje, the 33-year-old posted the fastest lap times in the field and made up ground. In the adverse conditions during the final part of the race, he brought the slick-shod GT3 all the way up to ninth place, securing valuable championship points as a result.

The #21 Team Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 with Jeroen Bleekemolen (NED) and Jimmy Eriksson (SWE) improved from P24 to P18. With the #48 MANN-FILTER Team HTP Motorsport entry, Philip Ellis (GER) and Fabian Vettel (GER), who had started from P20, incurred a drive-through penalty for a too short pit stop, after which the duo ended up in 24th place. The #20 Team Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing car had to deal with problems in practice already that led to an early retirement from the race. Subsequently, Kelvin Snoeks (NED) and Mick Wishofer (AUT) were unable to participate in the race on Sunday.

For the Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing Teams, Sunday at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben started with a difficult qualifying: on a wet track, Götz initially kept his top five position. As the track dried out more and more towards the end of the session, he dropped back to 13th place on the grid. In the race, held in fully dry conditions, the #47 made up ground. Final driver Dontje concluded the recovery in eighth position as the best-placed Mercedes-AMG GT3.

Team Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing drivers Bleekemolen/Eriksson started the race on Sunday from 25th place on the grid and managed to make up five positions until the finish. Just behind them, Read/Dienst finished in 21st place with the #36 Schütz Motorsport Mercedes-AMG GT3. The fifth-placed team from the day before had started the race from P28. Fabian Vettel with the #48 had bad luck: the ADAC GT Masters debutant came off the track in qualifying and remained without a timed lap. From the back of the field, not much progress was made: P26 for Vettel and his teammate Ellis. The next ADAC GT Masters round will be taking place at Automotodrom Most from 17-19 May 2019.

Maximilian Götz, MANN-FILTER Team HTP Motorsport #47: “The weekend didn’t go as we had hoped. However, looking at the number of positions we have managed to make up in the two races, it is quite positive: from 23rd to ninth yesterday, from 13th to eighth today. But still: one can see how important qualifying is in the ADAC GT Masters. There, we weren’t looking too good this time. We have to work on that. When we succeed, I have no doubt that we will be among the frontrunners in the next races. It is still too early to make any championship predictions anyway. At least, we finished in the point-scoring positions on both occasions.”

Marvin Dienst, Schütz Motorsport #36: “Saturday was very good for us. My first place in qualifying was an excellent position to start from as overtaking is notoriously difficult at Oschersleben. In the race, I was able to pull a slight gap from the rest of the field together with an opponent. The driver change was faultless as well, we maintained our lead. Then, however, the rain cost us victory. For Aiden, who competed in his maiden ADAC GT Masters round here, it was incredibly difficult. It wasn’t just anyone behind him, it were the world’s top GT racers. Of course, that means that you are under pressure. But he did well and safely brought the car home.”
