The Mercedes-Benz bus range for travel and regular transport services is to feature even more environmentally friendly specifications in the future. Over and above the proven BlueTec 5 diesel technology, the buses are now being made available in EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) versions. The optional EEV emissions standard is currently the strictest European emissions standard, with limits which are below those of the Euro 5 standard. This translates into even lower pollutant emissions, thereby undercutting the Euro 5 standard in terms of particle emissions, for example, by around 30%, but without a fuel economy penalty.

It generates no emissions while running, is whisper-quiet and conserves resources: the new Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid bus from Mercedes-Benz opens up a whole new era in drive technology for urban buses. The newcomer had its world premiere in June 2009 at the UITP Congress (the World Congress of the Inter¬national Association of Public Transport) in Vienna and could be seen in action for the first time on the occasion of the final conference of the HyFLEET:CUTE project in Hamburg. The advent of the Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid bus means that the future really has arrived: the launch of the prototype will shortly be followed by small series production while next year will see the start of a large-scale test of the Citaro FuelCELL-Hybrid bus on the basis of ten customer vehicles in service in Hamburg. The objective is for further in-service testing in customer fleets to be conducted at European level.

Daimler has been offering its highly-efficient BlueTec diesel technology for com-mercial vehicles since early 2005 – and with great success. Since then, around 160,000 BlueTec commercial vehicles have taken to the streets of Europe, includ-ing Mercedes-Benz heavy trucks and Vario vans, as well as Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses. Over 90 percent of these vehicles already fulfill the Euro5 emissions standard not due for introduction until autumn 2009. So far, these BlueTec vehi-cles have saved their operators around 400 million liters of diesel fuel and the envi-ronment 100 million tones of CO2 emissions.
