On 15 August 2013 Ulrich Sieg, director of operations and infrastructure at Hamburger Hochbahn AG, and Steffen Rothhardt, head of the buses division at Hamburger Hochbahn AG, commissioned the 50th Mercedes-Benz Citaro to be delivered in 2013. The anniversary vehicle symbolises the more than 15 years of trust which Hamburger Hochbahn AG has placed in the Citaro concept since 1997. Tammo Voigt, Head of Public Transport Fleet Sales at Mercedes-Benz Buses & Coaches, handed over the vehicle at the port of Hamburg.

Premiere at the most important specialised trade fair for coach and group tourism. For the first time, the two brands Mercedes-Benz and Setra are present at the 39th RDA Workshop in Cologne (23 – 25 July 2013) sharing a stand together. In addition to two luxury touring coaches, the Setra S 516 HD/2 from the new ComfortClass 500 model series and the Mercedes-Benz Travego M, Stuttgart-based Daimler AG is also presenting a Sprinter Travel 65. The 2014 World Soccer Championship gradually approaches and metropolitan cities in Brazil are preparing themselves for the rise in traffic volumes during the mega sports event with infrastructural projects and fleet renewals. As part of this, Daimler´s subsidiary Mercedes-Benz do Brasil has received large orders for a total of 80 Mercedes-Benz buses. Trier’s public utility company has put three new Citaro Euro VI buses into service. The urban buses equipped with Euro VI exhaust treatment technology significantly improve urban environmental quality thanks to emissions that are 80 percent lower than those of their predecessors. At the same time, the fuel expenses of the transport operator are lower because the new buses use more than 8 percent less diesel fuel.

The green flag has dropped for the Record Run Buses 2012: At 2 p.m. in Wiesbaden today, Martin Zeilinger, head of product engineering testing drive technology and product quality Daimler Buses, sent off five Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses on an unprecedented efficiency test. The new Mercedes-Benz Citaro urban regular-service bus and the new Setra ComfortClass 500 high-deck touring coach are to prove that buses meeting Euro VI emission standards can consume less fuel than their predecessor models.

On 1 November 2012 a new regulation will come into force for commercial vehicles of 3.5 tonnes or more. According to Regulation No. 661/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council, all vehicle models and vehicles being entered into service for the first time that are type approved after this date must be fitted as standard with daytime running lights. From 1 November 2014 this regulation will also apply generally to all newly registered models within the European Union.

Daimler Buses has closed a major order for more than 150 buses from DB Fleet Management GmbH. Beginning in 2013, the Mercedes-Benz and Setra brand urban and intercity buses will be gradually delivered to Germany’s largest bus transport provider. All of the vehicles will be used in regional and urban transport operations.

Daimler FleetBoard is the first supplier of telematics solutions to offer a fleet management and driving analysis app for the Apple iPhone and iPad. Operators can use it to control their fleet of buses or coaches at any time and from any location. The trip recorder also makes it possible to display the most recent journey made. The app enables operators to monitor how their vehicles are being used, their drivers' working hours, the fuel consumption of their buses and coaches and the drivers' driving style. It is even possible to show the status of doors and loading ramps.

The Mercedes-Benz OC 500 RF chassis for buses and coaches produced in Sámano (Spain) is now available for two-axle touring coaches with ESP (Electronic Stability Program). This measure greatly enhances safety for buses and coaches based on chassis units and bodies. ESP helps to greatly reduce the risk of skidding, within the laws of physics, when cornering or performing evasive manoeuvres. If the bus or coach gets into a critical driving situation, ESP applies the brakes specifically and precisely at individual wheels to reduce the vehicle's speed until driving stability is restored.

The business relationship between the former Ulm commercial vehicle manufacturer Karl Kässbohrer and the former Daimler Engine Company in Stuttgart goes back as far as 1910. The very successful and well-matched partnership between the two brands in the EvoBus started long before the largest European bus and coach manufacturer was set up under the roof of the Daimler AG Group. This is something to be remembered shortly before the 100th birthday of the first Kässbohrer bus which drove along the suburban route Ulm-Wiblingen on 11th Februar, 1911, and in the year the brand Setra is 60 years old.

One of the first demonstration vehicles from the European Bus System of the Future (EBSF) research project was recently displayed at the international Mercedes-Benz symposium on future local public transportation. The vehicle, which is based on the Mercedes-Benz Citaro, is used to examine ideas associated with new passenger assistance systems. When the bus nears the stop, for example, special lighting elements show passengers where it is best to get on so that “congestion” is avoided at the doors. And in the interior, appropriate ceiling lights show passengers where seats are currently unoccupied.

Daimler AG and Uzavtosanoat JSC today signed an agreement for the establishment of a bus joint venture. The ceremony was held in Tashkent. The joint venture will assemble and sell coaches, intercity buses, city buses, and midibuses for the Uzbek market and for export to neighboring countries. With a contraction of 11 percent, the global bus market proved to be relatively stable in 2009, given overall economic developments around the world during that exceptional year. Demand in Western Europe was substantially more stable, declining by five percent. The city bus segment in particular benefited from strong public-sector demand, while the travel coach segment suffered a sharper decline. Demand in Latin America and Mexico decreased significantly, declining by 20 percent and 50 percent, respectively. By contrast, the markets in North America and Asia were about as stable as that of Western Europe.

Daimler Buses presented its new three-axle travel coach for the luxury segment at the 10th Auto Expo in New Delhi. The coach comes with an O 500 RSD 2436 chassis from Mercedes-Benz, while the body is assembled by the Indian partner company Sutlej Motors Ltd. The new buses meet all pertinent standards with regard to safety, comfort, quality, and reliability, and also conform to the Euro3 emission standard.

Daimler Buses will deliver 460 Mercedes-Benz brand coaches to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup. The vehicles were ordered by Autopax Passenger Service Ltd. based in Pretoria, the company is South Africa’s largest operator of regular-service long-distance coaches. Delivery of the Mercedes-Benz travel coaches is set to commence already in December 2009, with the last of the 460 vehicles to be delivered to the customer in late April 2010. Autopax transports almost four million passengers in South Africa each year. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Public Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA).

The European bus and coach jury at this year's international bus and coach fair, "Busworld Kortrijk", has crowned the Mercedes-Benz Travego, currently available since the beginning of 2009 in its third generation, "Coach of the Year 2010". The trophy was awarded by Stuart Jones, president of the Coach of the Year jury, to Michael Göpfarth, manager of the Mercedes-Benz Bus and Coach Unit of EvoBus GmbH, on 15 October. The Travego emerged victorious after the jury of experts from 17 European countries put the Travego through its paces against four other European competitors at the Coach Euro Test in June 2009 in Senlis, Paris.

Daimler Buses has once again won two contracts, and as a result it will deliver a total of 425 buses to the Netherlands by December. The biggest contract from the Netherlands to date is for 350 Mercedes-Benz urban and intercity buses, which were ordered by Qbuzz, a private bus operator with headquarters in Amersfoort. The vehicles will be employed in the provinces of Drenthe and Groningen. The second major contract is for 75 natural gas-powered Mercedes-Benz urban buses, which were ordered by Connexxion, the Netherlands’ largest public transport company, with headquarters in Hilversum. The environmentally friendly low-emission natural gas buses will be employed in the Arnhem-Nijmegen region.

To coincide with the start of the school year, Daimler AG is extending its initiative aimed at helping to increase road safety for school buses. As announced today by Hartmut Schick, Head of Daimler Buses, up until the end of October 2009 the company will be offering its Omniplus SafetyTraining course for school bus drivers and pupils at a discount of 30%. Furthermore, the first 15 schools and bus companies to register jointly will receive the training free of charge. The normal cost for such training is 1900 euros.

The plant, which Daimler Buses began operating in 1994, has approximately 350 employees who produce buses and chassis for the Mexican market.

Daimler Buses has been awarded a major contract to deliver 125 Mercedes-Benz feeder buses for the Gautrain Rapid Link project in South Africa. The Gautrain railway line will connect Johannesburg to Pretoria and Johannesburg's Oliver Tambo International Airport via Sandton. The project combines the railway line with a feeder bus service to allow commuters in Gauteng province to reach the train stations quickly. The first phase of construction is due for completion in 2010. The delivery of the Mercedes-Benz buses is expected to be completed by mid-2010.

Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles from Daimler AG have once again made it to the top in five out of ten categories in the ETM publishing house’s readers’ poll to find “The best commercial vehicles of 2009”. This year was the 13th time the vote has been held. In 2008 Daimler Buses achieved the best-ever sales result in its history. The unit sold a total of 40,600 buses and chassis of the Mercedes-Benz, Setra, and Orion brands worldwide, an increase of 4% on the previous record, which was set in 2007. What’s more, sales in Europe of Mercedes-Benz minibuses based on the Sprinter rose by 18% to 1,100 units.

The EvoBus GmbH management team and the company’s General Works Council have jointly agreed to pay a voluntary profit-sharing bonus of €2,100 to all 11,000 eligible EvoBus employees. The bonus, which will be included with wage and salary payments for March 2009, is the highest profit sharing payout issued since the establishment of EvoBus in 1995.

In a ceremony at the Headquarters, Mercedes-Benz Türk today celebrated the production milestones of 100,000 trucks and 50,000 buses. The company that commenced operations in 1967 with 73 employees is today Turkey’s largest manufacturer of trucks and buses, employing 4,500 men and women. Mercedes-Benz Türk has dominated the Turkish bus market for more than 40 years and currently has a market share of 61.8 percent for travel coaches and 26.1 percent for city buses. For the past six years, Mercedes-Benz Türk has also been the market leader for trucks over six tons, with a current market share of 30.6 percent.

Daimler has been offering its highly-efficient BlueTec diesel technology for com-mercial vehicles since early 2005 – and with great success. Since then, around 160,000 BlueTec commercial vehicles have taken to the streets of Europe, includ-ing Mercedes-Benz heavy trucks and Vario vans, as well as Mercedes-Benz and Setra buses. Over 90 percent of these vehicles already fulfill the Euro5 emissions standard not due for introduction until autumn 2009. So far, these BlueTec vehi-cles have saved their operators around 400 million liters of diesel fuel and the envi-ronment 100 million tones of CO2 emissions.
