A mobile performer in day-to-day driving, too
The compact exterior dimensions, with a length of 5.14 metres and a width of 1.93 metres (excluding mirrors), combine with the electromechanical power steering to ensure great manoeuvrability and impressive agility. With a turning circle of 11.8 metres, the Marco Polo is even more manoeuvrable than many a luxury-class saloon car. And with a height of 1.98 metres it is able to enter all normal garages, multi-level car parks, underground garages and car washes. This means the new Marco Polo has all the mobility needed to handle everyday driving, too. So apart from being ideal for travelling on holiday, it's equally suitable for driving to the supermarket, the office, the theatre or deep into the forest for some mountain biking. It thus offers maximum scope for spontaneity. And anyone who keeps their sports wear or evening attire in the Marco Polo's wardrobe can even get changed on board. Meanwhile, the cycle rack on the trailer coupling has room for up to three mountain bikes.
New standards for high-class appeal, homeliness and comfortable functionality
The new Marco Polo was developed in collaboration with long-standing Mercedes-Benz partner Westfalia and is produced by means of an integrated set-up involving the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vitoria (Spain) and the Westfalia plant in Wiedenbrück (Germany). The new Mercedes-Benz camper van blends impressive functionality with style, setting new standards in the compact camper vans and recreational vehicles segment.It is equipped with a kitchenette including drawers and a cupboard, as well as a wardrobe positioned on the left of the vehicle, a bench seat/bunk at the rear, swivelling front seats, a folding, sliding table and a roof bed.
The interior features an up-to-date and harmonious colour scheme composed of contrasting light and dark shades. This produces a wonderfully spacious and homely feel, especially when the roof is raised and the top bed folded up. The inside of the pop-up roof is finished in cheerful light tones, just like the roof liner, the side panelling and the furnishings. The seats are upholstered in a choice of silk beige Santiago fabric, black Santiago fabric, silk beige Lugano leather or black Lugano leather. The Marco Polo comes as standard with a hard-wearing, easy-care floor covering in yacht decking look that is available in light and dark finishes. This allows the floor and upholstery to be individually coordinated as desired, producing either a uniform colour scheme or a stylish light/dark contrast.
Trim in black piano-lacquer look clearly stands out from the porcelain-coloured surface of the furniture and gives the living space a sophisticated ambience. It extends from the kitchenette behind the driver's seat across the entire width of the cupboard and to the wardrobe at the rear, while in the front it continues into the dashboard. As a result, the living area and cockpit are blended into a harmonious unit. This inviting, homely stylishness can be rounded off with optional LED ambient lighting along the lower edge of the kitchenette. This gives off light in the warm Solar tone and is operated via a switch in the function console located between the kitchenette and the driver's seat.
Only LED lighting is used throughout the vehicle interior. There are two large main lights, one in the entrance area above the sliding door and one above the kitchenette. The light intensity can be adjusted to three different levels, allowing the interior lighting to be adapted to requirements: plenty of light when cooking in the evening, for example, and a cosy lighting effect for listening to music or playing cards while enjoying a glass of wine if it's raining or too cold outside. For optimum illumination when relaxing with a book, there is a total of four reading lamps in the living area. Meanwhile, two gooseneck lamps underneath the roof that are likewise dimmable with three settings create an individual lighting mood. LED technology can also be specified as an option for the headlamps and tail lights. This makes the Marco Polo the first ever compact camper van to offer LED technology for both interior and exterior light functions. Not only are the LED High Performance headlamps with Intelligent Light System extremely elegant to look at, they enhance safety, too.
Fully equipped kitchen with ingenious details
The kitchen module has a remarkably innovative stowage system. It consists of one large and two smaller self-closing drawers, all of which can be filled without having to adopt a "squatting" position, and a cupboard with sliding door for larger items of kitchenware such as pots and pans. The larger bottom drawer additionally features
an extending worktop and offers ample space for kitchenware or supplies. The two smaller drawers, which can accommodate plates, glasses or cutlery, for example, can also be opened when the bed is folded out.
The kitchenette is fully equipped, with a gas cooker incorporating two burners, a sink and a compressor refrigerator. The respective covers can be raised individually, which means that the areas which are not required can serve as useful surfaces on which items can be placed temporarily. A further advantage is that the covers are made of easy-care smoked safety glass,ensuring that light is able to enter through the window into the interior even when the covers are raised. The refrigerator has a capacity of 40 l and a cooling capacity of up to minus 20 degrees Celsius. The fresh water tank has a capacity of 38 l, the waste water tank 40 l. Both tanks are therefore considerably larger than in the predecessor model. They are located in the vehicle interior, where they are protected against frost.
A central control panel with display in the dashboard's centre console clearly indicates the levels of the two tanks as well as the charge level of the additional battery for the living area's power supply. Depending on ambient temperatures and the amount of electricity used, the additional battery can last for up to three days without needing to be recharged. Integrated into the kitchen cupboard console there is a 230 volt power socket, a residual-current circuit breaker and a USB charging port. A second USB charging port can be found on the roof bed. The Marco Polo is furthermore equipped with 12 volt power sockets on the right next to the bench seat and in the luggage compartment underneath the bed extension. The gas bottle for the stove (model Campinggaz R907, 2.75 kg) is located in a stowage compartment directly behind the wardrobe, where it can be easily accessed from the rear.
Convenient folding table, wardrobe and diverse loading options
The folding table consisting of a lightweight aluminium honeycomb material and featuring a robust surface is fitted to the kitchenette in space-saving configuration. A rail enables it to be slid in and out in a flexible manner. This means that it can be positioned ideally for up to four people – two on the luxury bench seat and one each on the driver's seat, which can be rotated by 140 degrees, and the front passenger seat, which can be turned a full 180 degrees. A rounded aluminium profile rim runs around the tabletop, serving to catch crumbs and protect the table from knocks. When it is folded in, the table is locked into an upright position next to the bench seat, allowing unobstructed access between the front seats and the bench seat as well as to the kitchenette.
The large wardrobe located in the rear of the passenger compartment is fitted with sliding doors allowing convenient access from the front and rear. In the front area, to the left of the kitchenette, it offers a large area with a clothes rail and an upward-opening door with an illuminated swing-out mirror including a tray for cosmetic and care products. The mirror light also serves as a convenient means of illuminating the inside of the wardrobe. The light goes on automatically as soon as the sliding doors are opened.
The Marco Polo offers additional stowage facilities in the form of an overhead stowage box over the rear bench seat and a roomy drawer under the two-seater bench, which can also be removed. This enables the luggage compartment to be enlarged to accommodate larger items, such as sports equipment or toys and games. The bed extension can additionally be used as a second loading surface. Anyone in need of even more stowage space can fit a carrier system on the roof. Two attachment rails integrated in the shell of the roof are suitable for various systems, such as ski racks, roof boxes, or a Translift system, which facilitates loading of large items of sports equipment such as kayaks.The attachment rails additionally incorporate a bead rail for attaching standard awnings.
Outstanding seating and sleeping comfort
The two-seater bench in the rear can be repositioned on rails, and provides excellent lateral support thanks to electropneumatically inflatable side bolsters. The backrest is divided into two, and can be individually electrically adjusted on each side. Consequently, everyone can find their preferred seating or lying position at the touch of a button. One passenger can be sitting comfortably, for instance, while the other extends their seat fully to create a comfy single bed. And if both backrests are folded down together, the bench seat can be converted into a double bed measuring 2.03 metres by 1.13 metres in a matter of seconds. The electropneumatic system that already set new benchmarks in the outgoing model reconciles the conflicting aims of seating and sleeping comfort. The side bolsters are automatically deflated in the reclining position. When folded out to form a sleeping surface, the bench seat rises at the same time to conceal the seat belt buckles that would otherwise disturb sleep. The bed extension can also be pivoted upwards to form a comfortable headrest. To make the bed even more comfortable to sleep on, a breathable mattress pad is available as an accessory. The upholstery and the stitching on the bench seat are perfectly matched to the look of the driver's seats.
A second double bed, whose design likewise ensured an outstanding night's sleep in the predecessor model, can be found underneath the pop-up roof. Measuring 2.05 metres by 1.13 metres, the large luxury roof bed consists of a high-quality cold foam mattress and special spring elements with high point elasticity that allow an outstandingly ergonomic sleeping position right up to the edges of the mattress. With the roof space having a total width of 1.24 metres, there is also sufficient freedom of movement for arms and legs. A protective net can be attached to the front edge to safeguard children.
The pop-up roof has undergone further optimisation in comparison to the preceding model. It is produced in glass-fibre-reinforced plastic (GFRP), which prevents cold bridges, and features a concertina consisting of an opaque, waterproof and breathable woven fabric. Thanks to an innovative scissor-action system, it has been possible to increase the pop-up height in the rear area considerably and therefore provide particularly generous legroom. The light porcelain colour on the inside of the concertina creates a sense of spaciousness and a homely ambience, just like in a bedroom. The way in which the woven fabric draws in has been improved to ensure that it collapses accurately in concertina-like fashion when the roof is lowered again. The optionally available EASY-UP pop-up roof is equipped with a newly developed, particularly quiet electric motor. This is the first all-electric pop-up roof in the camper van segment. It is operated via the central control panel.
Whenever the bed is not in use and the roof is raised, the bed can be folded upwards at the front to provide plenty of headroom in the vehicle interior. At the same time, the two side ventilation slits in the concertina, which can be zipped open and closed, direct even more fresh air into the living area.
Electric vent window and detachable awning
The vent window in the rear right corner of the rear compartment supplies yet more fresh air for added comfort. It can be opened and closed electrically as standard - one of the Marco Polo's unique selling points. It is operated using a switch in the driver's door or in the right-hand armrest in the side panelling. The black-tinted glass, which protects the interior from prying eyes and helps to prevent it from heating up in direct sunlight during the day, is another standard feature, as are the black-out roller blinds in the rear. To allow the interior to be darkened completely, a washable curtain is available for the windscreen and the front side windows.
The Marco Polo is also ideally equipped for relaxing outdoors, with two camping chairs and a table on board as standard. They are conveniently stowed in a bag inside the luggage compartment under the bed extension. A pleasant shaded "terrace" surrounded by nature can be created by opting for the awning above the sliding door, which is now detachable –& nbsp;a first for this segment. It can be removed, in the winter, for example.
Climate control –& nbsp;individual and intelligent
The THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control that is optionally available instead of the standard TEMPMATIC system guarantees the occupants' individual comfort and well-being en route. It sets new standards in terms of the automatic mode's ability to adapt to individual passenger requirements. For the first time in this vehicle segment, three different ventilation modes with different air flow and distribution characteristics are available for personal climate control: FOCUS, MEDIUM and DIFFUSE. A further new feature is the 2-quadrant solar sensor for automatic adjustment of the interior temperature. It monitors solar irradiation and, when the sunshine becomes more intense, the blower speed and temperature are adjusted automatically in the affected quadrant – either on the driver's side or the front-passenger's side. This improves thermal comfort as and when required, especially in stop-and-go traffic. Further stand-out features of the new THERMOTRONIC automatic climate control include the integrated demisting sensor and automatic air recirculation control by GPS upon entering a tunnel.
THERMOTRONIC is configured as front and rear automatic climate control for three zones and is operated using the air conditioning control panel or the Controller. If a rear air conditioning system is additionally specified, the rear-seat passengers can enjoy individual climate comfort, too. Air distribution takes place automatically depending on the setting of the front system and the operating mode. In heating mode the air is directed to the footwell and the roof, while in cooling mode it is directed to the roof only. The air conditioning in the rear can also be controlled by the driver, via the central display.
The standard hot-air auxiliary heating with a function for heating when stationary takes care of keeping the interior nice and warm on cool evenings. The system works independently of the vehicle's engine and can be programmed to switch on and off from the central control panel using the timer function or set to run continuously. The temperature is likewise adjusted via the central control panel.A remote control is also available as an option.
Convenient loading and unloading through separately opening rear window
To make loading and unloading even easier, the Marco Polo can be specified witha separately opening rear window as an option. This makes it possible to use the second loading surface formed by the bed extension without opening the large tailgate. In this way, smaller items of luggage and shopping bags can be quickly stowed and kept ready to hand at all times. The separately opening rear window has the additional benefit of providing an extra opening window, meaning an even better supply of fresh air and more effective ventilation of the interior. At the end of a hot summer's day, for example, it can be opened to allow plenty of cool evening air to flow through the "bedroom".
There is also the option of the EASY-PACK tailgate with effortless power opening and closing that can also be stopped in any intermediate position. The sliding door can also be specified in a power operated version as an option. It comes as standard with an active catch to prevent the door from sliding shut when stopped on a slope.
Supreme comfort in the cockpit area too
The cockpit also takes comfort to a whole new level. Highlights include the free-standing central display, the multifunction steering wheel with 12 buttons and DIRECT SELECT lever with steering-wheel shift paddles for automatic models, as well as the innovative touchpad, which allows all telematics functions to be operated in the same way as on a smartphone. The Marco Polo also comes complete with the new "Mercedes-Benz Touch" app. This enables the COMAND Online infotainment system to be controlled from any seat by smartphone. Together, the app and touchpad form the key to the most cutting-edge control and display concept in this vehicle class. The latest generation of COMAND Online combines all audio, telephone and navigation functions and additionally offers an internet browser, the LINGUATRONIC voice control system and transmission of traffic data in real time.
The multifunction steering wheel which comes as standard in the Marco Polo is adjustable for height and tilt, allowing a relaxed seating position, especially on longer journeys. The luxury seats for driver and front passenger are adjustable too – for fore/aft position, height, backrest angle and seat cushion angle. They therefore allow each individual occupant to maintain an ideal posture. For the first time in this segment, a 4-way lumbar support is optionally available for both driver and front passenger to further relieve strain on the back. It is easily controlled at the push of a button. In addition to all this, the front seats swivel round too. For convenient entry and exit, they can be rotated outwards by 50 degrees. And when it's time to relax around the table with the passengers in the rear, the driver's seat can be swivelled the other way by 140 degrees and the front passenger seat by 180 degrees.
