BAS PLUS Brake Assist and DISTRONIC PLUS proximity control had their world premiere in the 221 model series Mercedes-Benz S-Class in 2005. The systems supported the driver during emergency braking. If the driver was distracted and therefore failed to spot the immediate risk of a rear-end collision, PRE-SAFE® Brake could intervene and autonomously apply the brakes. It had the effect of an “electronic crumple zone”. Graphic from 2009, English version. (Photo index number in the Mercedes-Benz Classic archives: 09C344_07)
