Stuttgart/Mammendorf
  • Palfinger crane with a height of up to 24 metres
  • Used for stripping out basements and demolition work
  • Short wheel base of 3350 mm for manoeuvrability
You can see at first glance that this Unimog U 500 is something really special: the vehicle is painted silver and the Palfinger Crane PK 34002 SH is not painted in its usual red, but green, "because that is the colour of our company logo," according to Gerhard Hamburger, Managing Director of Beton- und Stahlbau Hamburger GmbH.
But it is not just its appearance that is unusual: with its maximum height of 24 metres, a hydraulic range of 21.30 metres and a lifting force of 960 kilograms, it is the largest mobile crane ever mounted by the Werner Forst- und Industrietechnik company on a Unimog BlueTec 5 – in this case in cooperation with general distributor Henne-Unimog which is located near Munich.
The Bavarian businessman from Mammendorf near Fürstenfeldbruck mainly uses his Unimog U 500 for demolition work and stripping out basements on construction sites. And to provide a good overview, it has also been fitted with a high seat as an optional extra: from here, at a height of 3 metres, the user can operate the crane's controls. It is very important that every movement strikes home exactly so that jobs can be dealt with rapidly. Of course, it is also extremely helpful that the Unimog and its four stabilising supports can be set up and ready to work in just a few minutes.
As far as the wheelbase goes, Hamburger opted for the smaller version: the short version with its 3350 mm wheelbase and typical Unimog manoeuvrability is a great advantage when working on confined construction sites which are also often cluttered up with construction materials. "I have to be able to go anywhere with my vehicle, even if the way there is very narrow. But this is no problem with the Unimog" says Gerhard Hamburger.
