Under the microscope: Mercedes-Benz S 450: With intelligent charging

With the introduction of the integrated starter-generator under the name EQ Boost in the facelift S‑Class in the S 450 (combined fuel consumption: 7.5-7.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 171-166 g/km)[20], the 48-Volt on-board electrical system also celebrated its world premiere. The starter generator handles hybrid functions such as boost or energy recovery and makes fuel savings possible that were previously reserved for the high-voltage hybrid technology.

The new systematically electrified six-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-Benz S 450 (also as a 4MATIC model) generates 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. EQ Boost provides a further 250 Nm of torque as well as 16 kW (22 hp) at short notice.

Intelligent, forced induction that includes an electric booster compressor, as well as the integrated starter generator (ISG) provide outstanding power delivery without turbo lag. In addition, the engine starts extremely quickly and comfortably. Turing the engine on and off with the start-stop function, for example at traffic lights or when coasting, is almost imperceptible.

In addition, systematic electrification dispenses with the need for a belt drive for ancillary components at the front of the engine, which reduces its overall length. The slim design as an in-line engine, together with the physical separation of intake/exhaust, creates space for a near-engine emission control system. The 48-volt on-board power supply serves not only high power consumers such as the water pump and air-conditioning compressor, but also the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), which also supplies energy to the battery by means of highly efficient energy recuperation.

The S-Class: The automotive benchmark in efficiency and comfort

The facelift of the new S-Class in mid-2017 was extremely extensive, with over 6500 new components. Among the highlights were an all-new and highly efficient engine range with a series of new technologies for electrification of the powertrain. The top-of-the-range model of Mercedes-Benz also took another big step towards autonomous driving and elevated Intelligent Drive to the next level. Active Distance Control DISTRONIC and Active Steering Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of bends, junctions or roundabouts, for example (country-specific variations may occur in terms of the individual functions).

MULTIBEAM LED headlamps enable extremely quick and precise adjustment of the headlamps to the current traffic conditions. The ULTRA RANGE main beams produce the maximum light intensity permitted by law, which results in the brightness of the main beams remaining above the reference value of 1 lux over a distance of more than 650 metres. ROAD SURFACE SCAN for advance recognition of road bumps and the curve inclination function are further highlights of the S-Class.

At the same time, ENERGIZING comfort control enjoyed its début: This optional feature links various comfort systems in the vehicle together, such as climate control, ambience lighting, massage and fragrancing functions, among others, and allows customers to configure a specific wellness set-up to suit their mood or need. This enhances physical comfort and performance on the road.
