"Montage 21" project wins award: International award for robotics and automation goes to Mercedes-Benz

Munich/Stuttgart, Jul 2, 2008
  • Successful cooperation of automated and manual assembly
  • Optimised assembly of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class rear axle
  • New Robot applications extend the boundaries of technical feasibility, promoting more efficient production
Munich/Stuttgart – The international "Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award in Robotics and Automation 2008" goes to the "Montage 21" project of Mercedes-Benz. Stefan Müller, President of the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) and Professor Bruno Siciliano, President of the Robotics & Automation Society (IEEE-RAS), presented the award to Dr Michael Zürn, Thomas Brandstetter and Dr Dieter Steegmüller from Daimler AG. The production planning unit at Daimler AG has developed an entirely new equipment and technology concept for assembling rear axles, as part of its "Montage 21" project.
"We are delighted that our "Montage 21" system has been honoured with this renowned innovation award. The award is testimony to our achievements in the field of production technology," explained Dr Michael Zürn, Head of Manufacturing Technologies at Daimler AG. "Montage 21" is a new installation and technology concept for assembling rear axles, which is being used at the plants Untertürkheim and Hamburg. The concept restructures automated and manual assembly areas.
The rear axle is assembled by more than 45 collaborative robots (interlinked systems that work hand in hand). Only at the end of the process the axle is delivered for finishing to a hub with manual workstations where the various add‑on parts are fitted. Through this, the automatic processes are handled more efficiently. The new system has also led to substantial improvements in terms of ergonomics in the manual-assembly areas.
The annual Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) and the Robotics & Automation Society (IEEE-
RAS
) singles out outstanding projects that promote innovation in robotics and automation as a result of collaboration between industry and academic institutions.
