The interior that was created by the smart designers in Sindelfingen with lots of attention to detail is high-quality, modern and emotionally appealing. A "dynamic loop" forms a continuous signature in the interior. Confident contrasting colours on the dashboard, door centre panels and seat covers give the interior a high-quality and young appeal.
Further typical features are the spherical air vents in product style and the stand-alone centre touchscreen. The honeycomb pattern featured on the exterior is also found as a graphic feature in the interior. The ambient lighting usually found in higher segments underlines the high-quality appeal of the interior, whilst numerous stowage facilities increase the utility value.
"Loop" is the designers' name for the emotional sweep that features as a leitmotif in the interior, embellishing the dashboard and doors, for example. The sculptural dashboard itself consists of two sections – a bold and sensuous outer section which can optionally be covered with fabric, and a large, concave inner section incorporating the functional elements. In front of the dashboard, the instrument cluster and the infotainment centre with radio/navigation appear to hover as added elements. The spherical air vents have a sculptural look and are reminiscent of an aircraft engine.
The dashboard and the door centre panels in the three lines feature extensive fabric coverings. This high-quality textile surface is very pleasant to the touch and is reminiscent of the mesh inserts in modern sports shoes. The mesh structure is a USP in this vehicle segment.
The colour and material concept underscores the easy-going and charming character of the new smart generation, with the equipment lines standing for a distinctive and individual appearance. For example, the proxy features blue fabric on the dashboard and door centre panels and white accent trim parts. For the prime line the designers combined black fabric with white accent trim parts. The latter combination is optionally also available for the passion, as is fabric in orange combined with accent trim parts in black/grey. The seat covers take up the colour scheme. Alternatively, leather seats with white topstitching create a particularly high-quality ambience (standard for prime). The sporty front seats with bold contours are designed as integral seats.
The instrument cluster and its semi-circular segmentation for the speed and warning indicators cites the previous smart models, but in a new look. On the passion, prime and proxy the instrument cluster comes with a colour TFT display as standard. An additional instrument combining the display of the revs and time (option) is positioned on the left next to the instrument cluster.
The striking spherical air vents are simple and fun to use. The centrally positioned air conditioning control unit also features an unusual appearance: the desired temperature can be set on a scale in the middle with the aid of a sliding magnifying glass.
The three-spoke steering wheel (option) can be used to control the radio or navigation unit positioned in the centre of the dashboard. The infotainment centre in modern consumer electronics style appears to hover in front of the dashboard. The interior thus reflects the values of a young, active and networked generation. Whilst the smart Audio-System has varnished surfaces, the smart Media-System boasts navigation and touchscreen operation on its 7-inch display.
The doors take up the "loop" of the dashboard with their ellipsoidal sweep. The large armrest provides for comfort. The honeycomb pattern from the exterior is cited on the integrated loudspeaker and the tweeter in the mirror triangle. The large stowage compartment in the doors has room for a 1.5 litre bottle.
The three equipment lines feature a further practical stowage facility in the centre tunnel on the passenger side: a little drawer combining maximum space in a minimum area in the typical smart manner. The double cup holder (and a cup holder at the rear in the forfour) also increases the utility value. In addition, the lines feature ruffled pockets on the backrest of the driver and passenger seat.
Ambient lighting is available as an option for the prime, passion and proxy. The (front) doors, driver and passenger footwell and the glove compartment are indirectly illuminated. In the basic version there is an open stowage facility in place of the glove compartment.
A large panoramic roof with sun protection is available for the fortwo and forfour (option, standard for proxy) to create a particularly light and airy impression in the interior. Furthermore, an electric fabric folding top is available for the smart forfour.
