Design study of interior sculpture "Aesthetics No. 2" at Vitra Design Museum: Mercedes-Benz sponsors Bauhaus exhibition
30.
September 2015
Stuttgart/Weil am Rhein
Mercedes-Benz is the main sponsor of the Bauhaus exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. From 26 September 2015 to 28 February 2016 under the title "Das Bauhaus #allesistdesign", the Museum is presenting four themed groups of exhibits, pictures, sketches and drawings from the worlds of design, architecture, art, film and photography to provide a comprehensive overview of the design concept behind Bauhaus. The exhibits include the design study of the Mercedes-Benz interior sculpture "Aesthetics No. 2", which shows what inspires car designers. It also addresses the artistically creative process of interior design while visualising the aesthetics of sensual purity.
"One of the most influential stylistic movements, Bauhaus has always been considered a revolutionary trailblazer in the fields of art, architecture and design. Its simplicity of form and reduction to the essential is also reflected in Mercedes-Benz Design," says Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. "We welcome our partnership with the Vitra Design Museum and are proud to be able to enrich the exhibition with our sculpture."
The true-to-scale design model of the sculpture "Mercedes-Benz Aesthetics No. 2" is part of the themed group Communication. Visualising the aesthetics of sustainability, it takes its cue from the forms found in nature, which have been perfected over millions of years. The association with the wing/engine design of a modern jet forges a bridge to the emotively appealing design of Mercedes-Benz interiors. The sculpture is an idea that has been given visual form, intentionally avoiding the limited context of ergonomics, technical feasibility, formal constraints and, not least, the exterior, the aim being to impress the observer on a purely aesthetic-sensual level. It opens the viewer's eyes to the clear yet emotive sculptural design idiom of Mercedes-Benz interior design. At the same time, it successfully conveys the high aesthetic, functional and sensual claim of the Mercedes-Benz interior, thereby forging a bridge between art and the aesthetics of design. The sculpture compels the observer to pause. It challenges, reinterpreting the familiar while touching both the senses and the intellect. With it, the Mercedes-Benz designers portray the fundamental principle of operation as a part of design development. The creative experiment and the courage to go new ways still today has its justification. In an accompanying video interview, design chief Gorden Wagener further explains the philosophy of Mercedes-Benz Design.
Touring exhibition until 2016
The Bauhaus exhibition includes a wealth of rare exhibits, some of which have never been shown before. Yet it also documents the underlying development processes and visions of society. At the same time, it confronts the Bauhaus idea with contemporary design trends, such as the digital revolution, as well as with the works of numerous present-day designers and artists. The setting for the exhibition has been kept intentionally simple, the exhibits being displayed in open shelving systems. The exhibition is open daily to visitors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. "Das Bauhaus #allesistdesign" is a touring exhibition of the Vitra Design Museum and the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany. After its first showing in Weil am Rhein, the exhibition will move on to the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn. The exhibition curator is Jolanthe Kugler.
