The career of the current C-Class as a motorsport star began with the record-breaking drive completed by the 190 E 2.3-16 model in Nardò, southern Italy (13 to 21 August 1983). This was also the first major test for the new engine with four valves per cylinder and 136 kW (185 hp).

The Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2.3-16 was a star of the year 1983 – and set no less than several records between 11 and 21 August on the high-speed track in Nardò. In just 201 hours, 39 minutes and 43 seconds it covered a distance of 50,000 kilometres. In addition to this achievement it also set two more world records over a distance of 25,000 kilometres and nine records in its class. For the vehicle and above all for the then new four-valve engine, this provided impressive proof of the reliability over an extreme long distance.

At the end of November 1982, Mercedes-Benz presented the 190 and 190 E models from the W 201 model series to the press. The compact and technologically groundbreaking saloon supplemented the Mercedes-Benz passenger car product line with a third model series, alongside the mid-range series and the S-Class.
