For ten years now, the free download platform Mixed Tape from Mercedes-Benz has been delighting music fans around the world with the best from the international music newcomer scene. The first playlist of individually selected tracks appeared on 21 July 2004, receiving an immediate welcome from young music lovers and progressive media. Since then, 56 further compilations, with a total of some 600 tracks, have achieved 50 million downloads around the world. Since its very first day, Mixed Tape has fostered young talent from all over the world and has grown in standing alongside artists such as Fat Freddy’s Drop, Alice Russell, Robot Koch and Aluna Francis (AlunaGeorge/My Toys Like Me), who often found their first international platform here. The current, 57th compilation once again introduces ten hits, mixed as a Special Edition by Berlin-based DJ and producer collective Jazzanova. The cover image for the current compilation has been created by French artist Marc Turlan.
“Supporting young talents is an affair of the heart of Mercedes-Benz. With Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape, we offer an international platform to highly skilled artists and, at the same time, enthuse new target groups from all over the world”, commended Dr. Jens Thiemer, Head of Marketing Communications Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. “And it is free of cost, unconstrained and in touch with the latest musical trends.”
The ten tracks on this latest free download compilation continue the tradition of the Mixed Tape concept, being without exception authentic, diverse in style and unusual. They include, for example, Raury, who at just 17 years of age has already captivated the American pop scene. The Russian indie pop septet Tinavie delivers a compelling and idiosyncratic mixture of nu jazz and avant-pop, trip-hop and downtempo. Further stars in the newcomer firmament include Beam Delight from Mexico with their funky electropop and Ashton Fox, alias Sonder, from Johannesburg. The Special Edition anniversary compilation was mixed by Jazzanova. The Berlin-based DJ and producer collective made up of Alexander Barck, Jürgen von Knoblauch and Claas Brieler arranged the tracks as they would for radio. "The various tracks more or less fell into the right running order by themselves; I just provided the technical links. The idea was to create a flow of energy that takes you along with it on the journey", is how Alexander Barck describes his work. The result is an exclusive DJ mix that allows the varying talents of the different artists to shine through but also cleverly manages to emphasise the shared spirit.
The complete selection is available for listening or download at or direct at Soundcloud . Further information about the artists represented on the compilation may also be found there.
Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape: The success story
Since the launch of the platform, Mixed Tape has served more than once as a springboard for an international music career. Several of the artists introduced here have made it to the top of the charts or received awards such as a Grammy. Furthermore, some of the tracks have gone on to be produced for international stars such as Nelly Furtado and Destiny’s Child. On average, one artist from each Mixed Tape compilation has won a recording contract, while several have made appearances with show-business greats such as Lauryn Hill or Stevie Wonder.
To ensure the continuing supply of fascinating sounds and songs, the Mixed Tape editors tirelessly monitor blogs, live performances, radio channels, magazines and inside tips in search of the talents who will be defining the music scene of the future.
