Now even more lightweight, comfortable and practical – an all-new generation of passenger seats is one of the highlights being unveiled by bus and coach brand Setra at the 2010 International Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover. Setra is also presenting its first bus to display the "Blue Angel" eco-label, engines which comply with the EEV emissions standard without needing a particulate filter for regular-service buses and touring coaches, and a wealth of innovative equipment and appointments for its buses and coaches.
The new benchmark for passenger seats in buses and coaches
Maximum comfort, lightweight design, exemplary practicality, outstanding safety and unparalleled versatility – Setra's new generation of passenger seats sets the benchmark. The line-up ranges from practical seats for excursion buses and vehicles that can operate as regular-service buses or touring coaches to luxury seats for top-of-the-range long-distance touring coaches.
Two seat series that share an identical basic concept – the Setra Route for business-class buses or coaches and the Setra Voyage for top-of-the-range touring coaches – are now ready after almost four years of development work. From the seat frame to the upholstery, from the mounted parts to the seat covers – no element has remained unchanged, with the exception of the brand badge. The top-of-the-range variants Voyage Plus and Voyage Supreme open up new and exciting possibilities in terms of fabrics and colours – for an even more exclusive brand of travel. A combination of carefully selected, high-quality materials is used to set a further milestone in bus and coach development after almost 60 years of Setra – it's not just the buses and coaches themselves but also the seats which live up to the claim "Best in Class". The new seats are produced in-house, backed by the know-how of Europe's largest manufacturer of bus and coach passenger seats.
Looks and practicality in perfect harmony
The design of the new seats combines looks with practicality. The new side finishers, for example, are made from elegant, high-quality, lightweight aluminium. A large and clearly marked rocker-type switch at the side, which moves smoothly and is easy to grasp, is integrated for lateral adjustment of the aisle-side seats and adjustment of the backrest angle. The corresponding markings are easily visible and unmistakable.
The armrest for the new seats has an elegant shape as well as a large and ergonomic surface. The extremely simple and easy-to-use pivoting mechanism for folding away the armrest is a patented development which allows the armrest to pivot under the side finisher to afford completely free access to the seat from the side. Intuitive controls are another of the key features of the new seat generation.
Seat cushion resting on a sprung design
The backrest and the seat cushion also have a new shape. A long or short version of the cushion is available, depending on the type of bus. Further comfort features include an all-new sprung construction on which the seat cushion rests. What's more, the cushion can be removed easily for cleaning or repairs. After removal of the seat cushion, which takes just two moves, the entire seat mechanism is easily accessible.
Combination of quality and practicality
The seat frame is based on a lightweight aluminium twin-tube system. It weighs less than the previous design and, together with a new mounting, prevents annoying seat vibrations when driving with no passengers on board. Further features of the new generation of Setra passenger seats that exemplify maximum practicality and quality include the reinforced gas-operated spring support mounts, which are free of play, the selection of high-quality materials, and the new, patented armrest kinematics.
As before, the seat belt buckles are located to the side, away from the seat cushion. All seats now have them on the aisle side, which allows rescuers easier access in the event of an accident and also enables the belt buckle to be released by the passenger sitting nearest the wall. These Setra seats come with a two-point seat belt fitted as standard or a three-point seat belt as an option.
The steeper angle of the backrest in the starting position makes it easier for passengers to stand up. If the backrest is inclined, it can revert to its starting position automatically when the passenger leaves the seat. So the passenger compartment always looks neat and tidy without the driver having to do extra work. As an option, the footrest can also slide back to its starting position automatically.
Substantial reduction in weight
The lightweight design of the new seats is of particular benefit for two-axle touring coaches in countries with tight permissible GVW restrictions. Thanks to the use of lightweight materials such as aluminium, a new frame structure made of steel and plastic for the backrest, and a sophisticated design, the weight of each double seat has been reduced substantially compared to the previous seats. In a 12 metre long, three-star touring coach, the reduction amounts to around 70 kg – equivalent to an additional passenger seat according to the relevant standard.
Multitude of colours, forms and materials
The optional stitching for the new upholstery allows a multitude of possible colour, form and material compositions, all of which make for an even higher-quality appearance and even more individualisation options for appointments in top-of-the-range buses and coaches.
The new seat generation also includes new mounted parts which are likewise highly individual in terms of their form and variety. Luggage nets and seat pockets made of fabric, tables, cup holders and grab handles of various designs, footrests, and different options for the armrest (without armrest, rigid armrest, folding armrest) mean that the number of variants is almost limitless. In this way, each bus or coach can be tailored precisely to suit its specific use.
Setra Route: the passenger seat for business class
The highly practical Setra Route seat for combined-use vehicles and business-class buses and coaches features an ideally spaced, fixed backrest, a short seat cushion and an aisle-side grab handle as standard. A number of options are available, including armrests, an adjustable backrest, a lateral adjustment function, a footrest and numerous mounted parts as well as a range of upholsteries and covers. If robustness is a priority alongside comfort, Setra can equip the Setra Route seat with a vandal-proof back.
Setra Voyage: the passenger seat for top-of-the-range buses and coaches
The exceptionally high-quality Setra Voyage seat features an adjustable, thickly padded backrest, a lateral adjustment function, double grab handles, a folding aisle-side armrest and a luggage net – all as standard. Bus and coach customers can further upgrade the seats by adding numerous details, including a legrest.
Wide variety thanks to a sophisticated modular system
Whether it be piping in fabric or leather, head sections in leather, full-length head restraints, details such as bag hooks or litter bins, or high-quality extras such as audio systems with headphone jack – the choice is practically unlimited thanks to a sophisticated modular system for both seat series. For buses used for both regular-service routes and excursions, the developers have designed cinema-style seats with a folding seat cushion as well as swivel seats.
Individualisation options include designer trims in wood and carbon fibre for the adjustment rocker switch on the aisle side and for the grab handle inserts on the backrests. As before, there is a range of exclusive upholstery and stitching options (Voyage Plus, Voyage Supreme) available for further enhancing the seats.
Voyage Plus and Voyage Supreme: comfort at its best
The Voyage Plus variant provides outstanding comfort thanks to extra padding and special tailoring. What's more, the stitching and numerous combinations of materials and colours make the seat particularly pleasing on the eye. There is also the choice of upgrading further to the top-of-the-range Voyage Supreme version, which features even more opulent upholstery and is designed to please even the most discerning of passengers. It provides an ideal mix of comfort and safety – for those who want to travel in luxury and style. Standard features of this seat include head sections and piping in leather, while fabric piping is available as an option.
Around 100 types of fabric and leather to choose from
The choice of fabrics and leathers available in the new collection is equally impressive. Customers can choose from more than 80 different fabrics as well as over a dozen types of leather, which can be combined in almost any number of ways. In this respect, too, the new seats offer plenty of scope for individuality.
Setra is successively introducing the new passenger seats for all model series between October 2010 and the start of the touring season in spring 2011. Exclusive luxury variants and exceptionally wide Ambassador single seats for 2+1 or even 1+1 seating will follow.
Three model series cover practically every requirement
Setra will go into 2011 with a fresh model range consisting of contemporary and facelifted model series. The line-up comprises the MultiClass, ComfortClass and TopClass model series, each of which is incontestably a premium-class offering in its respective segment, with a wide range of variants covering practically every requirement. It is not by chance that "Best in Class" is the motto for all Setra model series – stamped like a seal on the Setra models being exhibited at the 2010 International Commercial Vehicle Show.
Maximum comfort and safety combined with elegant looks are hallmark features of all Setra touring coaches. Added to this is economy – thanks to low running costs – and high value retention. Eco-friendly design is another strong point. All Setra buses and coaches with a six-cylinder in-line engine OM 457 can now meet the requirements of the EEV standard – currently the most stringent voluntary emissions standard – without needing a particulate filter.
TopClass 400: new, cutting-edge comfort features
As well as incorporating exemplary safety equipment, the top-of-the-range Setra TopClass series continues to shine with its innovative comfort features. As displayed in impressive fashion by a Setra S 416 HDH model on show at the 2010 International Commercial Vehicle Show. The three-axle super high-decker impresses with a wealth of innovative details. By way of example, passengers boarding the bus are met by a blast of fresh air from the atomiser at the entrance. In the passenger compartment, Setra has installed a floor with genuine stone veneer – a first for buses and coaches. When it's time for a break, passengers can move outside the bus to be served with drinks from a high-quality Jura coffee maker or the coolbox on a fold-out counter with glasses board.
Folding ten-inch monitors below the luggage racks, WLAN, power sockets, inverters, a radio system with USB interface and the new, high-quality Setra Voyage Supreme seats with a combination of white leather and red suede-style "Dinamica Star" upholstery are just a few examples of the many other comfort features on board.
The exhibited Setra S 431 DT double-decker underlines the outstanding quality of Setra long-distance touring coaches. Taking its cue from aircraft and trains, the upper deck features generous four-star appointments and serves as a second-class compartment, while the lower deck with ample five-star seat spacing is designed for first-class travel.
The two decks – each of which features new Setra Voyage Plus seats – also have different colour schemes: whereas red tones are used for the upper deck, the lower deck features a striking black and white combination. The seat head sections are adorned with ostrich-look leather. The luggage rack, wardrobe and newspaper holders underline the high-class nature of the bus. Equally impressive is the newly introduced infotainment system on the lower deck, including folding monitors on the tables, a WLAN router and a server solution for a multitude of information and entertainment programmes.
ComfortClass 400: safety without compromise
At the heart of the Setra range are the ComfortClass touring coaches. These business-class models range from excursion buses used occasionally for regular-service work to classic touring coaches and buses used on long-distance routes. Consistent with this, the range comprises seven raised-floor and high-decker touring coaches measuring between 12.2 and 15.0 metres in length.
A Setra S 415 GT-HD high-decker will be on display at the International Commercial Vehicle Show to highlight the capabilities of the ComfortClass. One of the hallmark features is its unprecedented level of safety. Measuring 12.2 metres in length, the two-axle model is fitted with exemplary safety equipment as standard, including the unique Front Collision Guard system, as well as a combination of adaptive cruise control and Active Brake Assist (ABA), the Lane Assistant, powerful Litronic headlamps, a new navigation system, a reversing aid, and the fire detection system, which will be fitted as standard on all Setra models from model year 2011 onwards. The exhibited Setra model is proof that a safety equipment package including all the currently available features is also possible for business-class touring coaches.
Six-cylinder in-line engine which complies with the EEV emissions standard without needing a particulate filter
The same applies when it comes to environmental compatibility, as underlined impressively by the exhibited high-decker: all Setra buses with a six-cylinder in-line diesel engine now meet the requirements of the EEV standard, currently the most stringent voluntary emissions standard, as indicated by the green EEV label on the engine compartment flap. This compliance is achieved solely by means of engine modifications – a particulate filter is not necessary. This applies to both regular-service buses and touring coaches.
MultiClass 400: versatility is its trump card
The MultiClass for demanding rural regular-service routes and excursions is a perfect example of Setra versatility. With a line-up comprising nine buses and coaches – ranging from the MultiClass NF low-floor bus and the classic MultiClass UL rural-service bus to the MultiClass H raised-floor bus – and a choice of five lengths, the Setra MultiClass series is exceptionally versatile. The UL models are also available with the same cockpit and elegant, angled windscreen as the touring coaches in place of the practical, steep windscreen.
No less than three Setra exhibits at the International Commercial Vehicle Show underline the versatility of the MultiClass series. The Setra S 415 NF on show is the first Setra model to bear the "Blue Angel" eco-label. As well as meeting the requirements of the EEV emissions standard, it does even more for the environment on account of the materials used and its ecofriendly production. Setra indicates this on the outside of the vehicle with a striking "Blue Angel" sticker. Inside the bus, a grass-green lawn-effect floor underlines the regular-service vehicle's green credentials.
A Setra MultiClass S 417 UL takes on the role of the double earner among the show models. The front section of the touring coach, platforms and new Setra Route seats mark out the bus as an excursion vehicle. The removable pram platform opposite the centre door and a wheelchair lift in the double-width centre aisle are just two of the many features that make this Setra model ideal for rural regular-service routes.
The third member of the large MultiClass family on display at the International Commercial Vehicle Show is a Setra S 415 H. It features a wealth of practical equipment and appointments. The new Setra Route seats and an automatic transmission underline the high level of comfort offered by Setra models, even when used as shuttle buses – to take passengers to and from airports, for example.
