  • SSB and moovel are working together to offer a new kind of mobility service
  • SSB’s new service will be an on-demand addition to Stuttgart’s public transportation network
  • The mobility service is based on the moovel on-demand platform
  • Flex Pilot test run was a success with more than 20,000 passengers

On June 4, Dr Michael Münter, Head of Strategic Planning and Sustainable Mobility for the City of Stuttgart, Jörg Lamparter, Head of Mobility Services at Daimler Financial Services, and SSB’s Commercial Director Stefanie Haaks introduced the new SSB Flex concept. Since June 1, this new local public transportation network service has been operating in the Degerloch and Bad Cannstatt areas during the daytime, as well as from 9 p.m. Thursdays to Saturdays in the center of Stuttgart. Passengers make their journey requests via an app (on demand) and then share part of their route with other passengers (known as ridesharing).

“Significant innovations for the future of mobility have often originated in Stuttgart. It’s important for the city to try out new forms of networked and multimodal mobility, and this is also in the interest of the ‘Sustainable mobility in Stuttgart’ action plan. I’m confident that SSB Flex, with its future-proof digital information and booking platform, will be a key addition to Stuttgart’s local public transportation network. I am particularly pleased that two of the traditional heavyweights of Stuttgart’s mobility services, each with their own different key functions, are working together to lead the way and explore what the future could bring,” explains Dr Michael Münter, Head of Strategic Planning and Sustainable Mobility for the City of Stuttgart.

"Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG and moovel have been cooperating since 2012 to simplify access to mobility in Stuttgart. Since 2015, public transport tickets can be booked and paid for directly in the moovel app in addition to journeys with car2go, mytaxi and Deutsche Bahn. And with SSB BestPreis, we offer an innovative app since the beginning of this year that calculates the best price for occasional drivers. SSB Flex is the next stage in our cooperation. We are convinced that multimodal platforms promote the switch to public transport and contribute to the quality of life in cities," says Jörg Lamparter, Head of Mobility Services at Daimler Financial Services AG.

“Our focus is on improving services for our customers. And our job is to provide the residents of Stuttgart with as broad and comprehensive a range of public transportation services as possible. With the help of digital technology from our partner moovel, we, together with our passengers, have the opportunity to improve Stuttgart’s public transportation services, even in areas or at times that were not particularly well served with the previous services available. The public transportation of the future will, in our view, also feature these kinds of services. This type of public transportation service is also so easily accessible that not only will our current public transportation users have a better deal, we will certainly be able to attract new passengers as well. We are looking forward to gaining experience together with our passengers over the next year and a half,” says Stefanie Haaks, Commercial Director of SSB.
