In future, too, the smart fortwo will have the genes of innovation, functionality and joie de vivre. The optimised suspension, the longer wheelbase and the slightly larger body make it even more comfortable.
Comfortable, agile, safe and environmentally friendly
The active and passive safety of the smart fortwo have been further improved. Its new drive technology provides for enhanced agility and driving fun, however without losing sight of environmental friendliness. And it's not only in this discipline that the smart fortwo holds a top position worldwide.
The profile of smart fortwo buyers is also unique. 85 percent of smart fortwo owners are under 40. They are people with individual lifestyles from different social classes. They all drive a smart and in doing so demonstrate that they have an enlightened and modern outlook. They show social and environmental responsibility, demonstrating the form that perfect urban mobility can take today. A smart fortwo isn't just extremely economical, lively and easy to drive; with its length of considerably less than three metres it also takes up an unrivalled amount of road and parking space.
A smart fortwo is classless – a distinction that very few cars can boast. It can be a first, second or third car. A student enjoys driving it to university just as much as an Art Director does to his advertising agency (leaving his eight-cylinder car in the garage). Like all drivers of a smart fortwo they know that this is all the car a person needs in the city.
The design of the smart fortwo has been evolved, yet its unmistakable character remains. Characteristic features include the one-box silhouette, the two-colour and two-material concept with the striking tridion safety cell, the innovative and extremely practical plastic bodypanels and the transparent panoramic roof made of polycarbonate. The roof is slightly tinted and has a scratch-resistant exterior and interior coating.
In future, too, a smart fortwo will be instantly recognised as such at first glance. The cult two-seater has been a familiar part of the roadscape for eight years. It is now sold in 36 countries and it is well-liked everywhere.
More agility thanks to new suspension and more powerful engines
The smart fortwo will be launched in April 2007 with new petrol engines. The 1.0 litre three cylinder rear-mounted engine delivers 45 kW, 52 kW or 62 kW (61 bhp, 71 bhp or 84 bhp). The all-aluminium power unit with variable valve control was developed in cooperation with Mitsubishi, and is produced in Japan. The diesel engine is based on the engine from the predecessor model. It has been reengineered and also has three cylinders. It delivers 33 kW (45 bhp) with capacity of 0.8 litres.
All engines are linked to an automated manual five-speed transmission from Getrag that has much shorter shifting times than the previous transmission. This is particularly advantageous when the driver wants to shift down two gears at once. The transmission is fitted with a kick-down function for this purpose which allows the driver to use the accelerator pedal to immediately shift down two gears at once, in both manual and automatic mode.
The petrol versions have a maximum speed of 145 km/h. Despite the greater engine power, the standard consumption of the petrol versions stands at just 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres. The 45 kW and 52 kW versions of the smart fortwo coupé consume just 4.7 litres.
The diesel version boasts even lower fuel consumption. The new smart fortwo cdi does not only comply with all European exhaust gas standards; at 3.3 litres per
100 kilometres it has the lowest consumption in its class. With CO2 emissions of just 88 grams per kilometre, the smart fortwo cdi achieves "three litre" status and has the lowest CO2 emissions of all cars on the market today.
The modified suspension geometry and setup give the new smart fortwo noticeably more agility and better responsiveness. However, despite the car’s sporty orientation, no compromises are made on comfort and even longer journeys present no problem at all. The steering plays an important role in the agile driving feel and with a transmission ratio of 22:1 it is now ten percent more direct. The turning circle is just 8.75 metres – a figure unmatched by any other small car. This makes manoeuvring extremely easy and allows turning in places where any other car would have to shunt to and fro.
Still smart – inside and out
The 19.5 centimetre increase in length as against the first generation benefits pedestrians, rear impact protection and ride comfort.
The luggage compartment holds 220 litres, and up to 340 litres when loaded to the roof. Six drinks crates or four folding plastic boxes fit comfortably behind the seats. Even longer objects can be easily transported: a lever on the inside of the passenger seat both reclines the backrest and enables it to be folded forward to a horizontal position. The twin-section tailgate requires very little room to open in tight parking spaces. The lower part can be used as a little platform and facilitates loading and unloading. When folded down it can take a load of 50 kilograms. In addition, the platform has an eight-litre storage compartment with a lid (not on the 45 kW version) which is perfect for storing all different kinds of small objects.
Like the exterior, it goes without saying that the interior of the smart fortwo remains truly smart. Typical smart features include the large fabric-covered areas on the doors and instrument panels, the further improved safety seats with integral seat belts and last but not least the ignition lock behind the shift lever.
The real feeling of spaciousness, enhanced by the shape of the instrument panel that is now straight, is also characteristic of smart. The instrument panel accommodates the typical smart air vents that have a 20 percent improved air flow and the externally-mounted round instruments (clock and rev counter).
Safety at the highest level
The new smart fortwo has been subjected to extensive crash tests in accordance with the strict safety standards of the Mercedes Car Group. Its passive safety is outstanding and exemplary for its segment. Full-size airbags, belt tensioners, belt-force limiters, abs, esp and brake assist are all included in the standard spec. No other small car boasts this level of standard equipment!
The structure of the body is additionally reinforced with high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel at strategically important points (more than 50 percent). The tridion safety cell’s longitudinal and transverse members activate the crumple zone of the other vehicle involved in the accident and distribute the impact energy evenly over the car’s body. Not only are all European standards met but also those that apply in America. This is because the smart fortwo will be launched on the US market for the first time in 2008.
New regulations concerning pedestrian protection have been implemented in the front section. The service panel (front lid) is made from elastic plastic. The front spoiler is backed with foam five centimetres thick at impact height. The axes of the windscreen wipers, which have a clap-hands design and come with soft aero wiper blades (unique in the small car segment), are in a concealed position.
All interior trims have been optimised to prevent injuries to occupants. The side roof bars have been made even slimmer to provide more headroom. The soft foam-backed lower instrument panel (kneepad) offers protection for the passengers' knees and lower legs. Furthermore, new head/thorax side airbags offering extensive protection in the event of a side crash are available as an option.
Extensive range of standard equipment and options
The most important standard equipment includes H7 headlights featuring projection technology, central locking with radio remote control, folding driver and passenger seat backrests that can be adjusted with a notch lever, an exterior temperature indicator, comfort windscreen wipers with speed-sensitive interval wiping and indicators with lanechanger function.
The smart fortwo can be individualised and tailored to customer requirements with a wide range of extras. These include head/thorax side airbags, air conditioning (standard for passion), electric power steering, heated seats, alloy wheels (standard for pulse and passion), leather seats, Isofix child seat fastener, a high quality audio system with a CD changer for 6 CDs and a sound system featuring a subwoofer and an MP3 interface.
Furthermore, a portable navigation system that can be integrated in the car is available. Voice instructions are given via the loudspeakers of the stereo system. Further options that are often only found in high-end cars include a light and rain sensor and electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors.

The smart fortwo can be tailored to personal requirements with an extensive range of accessories. For example the radiator grille, door mirror caps and rear trim strip in chrome give the smart fortwo an even more elegant appearance.
A flexible cargo system with slot-in sections that is also available as a genuine accessory maintains order in the luggage compartment. This enables the luggage compartment to be partitioned as required and shopping can be fixed with straps or a bag to prevent it from sliding around.
In addition to a hazard warning triangle, emergency jacket and first aid kid the safety plus package includes a torch, umbrella and ice scraper among other things. Everything is cleverly stowed in space-saving mode in the compartment in the tailgate.
Much longer maintenance intervals
As well as its low consumption, the low running costs make the smart fortwo the most economical car there is. The maintenance intervals are extremely customer-friendly. For example, the 52 kW variant now only needs to be inspected every two years or every 40,000 kilometres. In the meantime, an oil change is all that is needed. We recommend the "oil service plus" - a brief vehicle check instead of a full inspection.
Ease of repair
Thanks to its plastic bodypanels the smart comes away completely undamaged by small parking bumps, which for many other cars would immediately mean expensive repairs. The white, black or yellow panels are flexible and the colour is moulded-in, so scratches go virtually unnoticed. However, should a bodypanel ever sustain major damage, it can be replaced quickly and inexpensively. There is no need for repainting.
Further protection against damage is provided by an aluminium support located transversally behind the bumper, and crash boxes, which absorb deformation energy and protect the vehicle body itself. The boxes are bolted on and can be replaced inexpensively if necessary.
Stability of value
After eight years on the market, the smart fortwo is one of the most value-stable cars there is - not just in its class. This is typical for cars with cult status. The new smart fortwo looks well set to continue setting standards in terms of value stability because in future there will be an increasing demand for inexpensive and environmentally friendly mobility, however without making any compromises on comfort, safety and driving fun.
