Together with the Unimog and the Econic, the all-wheel-drive cab-behind-engine truck bearing the distinctive name of Zetros belongs to the Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks range and has also achieved recognition in the municipal services sector.
The three-axle Zetros 2733A/6x6/48 has a gross vehicle weight of 25/27 t, a load capacity of 14 to 16 t, a wheelbase of 4750 mm + 1450 mm and is driven by an inline six-cylinder engine with charge-air cooling (OM 926 LA). Thanks to BlueTec technology, this is particularly eco-friendly and complies with the Euro 5 standard. The light, compact turbo diesel engine produces a full 240 kW (326 hp) from a displacement of 7.2 l, and a maximum torque of 1300 Nm at 1200 to 1600 rpm. The transmission has 8 gears plus a crawler gear, and a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission is also available as an option.
The Zetros is perfectly equipped for operations over the most difficult terrain – and even under the most extreme conditions. Its superior off-road concept derives from the perfect interaction of its powerful chassis components which ensure fast and safe driving over very varying types of ground. In addition, it has outstanding traction handling and is extremely stable thanks to a cab-behind-engine design and well-balanced axle load distribution.
The Zetros meets the highest ergonomic standards and delivers outstanding ease of use. The position of the driver’s cab minimises the impact of bumps and jolts as well as the self-movement of the cab, thus ensuring excellent ride comfort and reducing the strain on driver and co-driver. The generous proportions of the Zetros cab offer plenty of legroom and an optimum layout of control elements and displays. A further highlight is the optional climate-controlled cab without an engine tunnel. It offers plenty of stowage space, complete through-cab access and full-size seats for up to three people.
On display at Ifat Entsorga is a Zetros 2733 6x6, fitted with a RISA body from French Mercedes-Benz partner Lemonnier Environnement.
The features of the TA 100 TA 30 post driver with crane body which is on display are particularly beneficial for off-road applications. Thanks to the low cab, the vehicle can also transport the posts, thus no additional means of transport is required. With a maximum height of 3.73 m (incl. posts), the Zetros can also easily pass beneath bridges. When installing telegraph poles or power line pylons, it is possible to attain a height of 11.8 m with the hook of the crane, as well as a pivot width of 13.8 m vertically and 10.4 m horizontally. The boring reach (distance from vehicle to the borehole) is 6 m, and the crane has a lifting capacity of up to 10 t.
Powerful boring rig
The vehicle concept is based on two telescopic arms which can be moved individually by means of remote control. A 200-litre oil tank with cooling is provided. The boring rig is driven by a 16,000 Nm engine. Behind the driver's cab there are two equipment carriers for boring rigs with a diameter of 400 mm and 600 mm. The hydraulic cables retract automatically.
LED lights show the driver when the weight capacity of the crane has been reached. An additional safety feature is the emergency stop button. Optional extras on the Zetros include a 200-litre water tank, two tool boxes and a protective grille around the cab.
