Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 316 NGT (concept study)
Engines that run on natural gas play an important part in the campaign to reduce harmful emissions and, if regeneratively produced biomethane is added, also cut CO2 emissions. Exhibited as a concept van, the Sprinter 316 NGT (115 kW/156 hp with a displacement of 1795 cc) with a box body has the NGT suffix in its name because it features "Natural Gas Technology". It can run on either petrol or natural gas. The compressed-gas tanks are installed under the floor to provide protection in the event of accidents. The Sprinter NGT is due to go into series production in the middle of the year. This IFAT exhibit features not the Sprinter's standard all-wheel-drive system, which is manually selectable and splits the power 65:35 between the rear axle and front axle.
Mercedes-Benz Atego 1318 LKO with a Bucher-Schörling Citifant 60 sweeper
The Atego with a wheelbase length of 3260 millimetres is an exceptionally manoeuvrable vehicle with a permissible gross vehicle weight of 15 t. The four-cylinder engine has an output of 130 kW (177 hp) and a displacement of 4249 cc. Key equipment for this chassis includes an engine brake with a constantly-open throttle valve, the Telligent braking system with ABS and rear air suspension.
The permanently mounted Bucher-Schörling sweeper is especially suitable for cleaning large road surfaces and other areas: the dirt tank has a capacity of six cubic metres, while 1500 litres of fresh water can be carried for the purpose of dust binding. Pneumatically controlled disc brushes operate at the sweeper attached between the axles. In front of this there is a high-pressure washer system.
Mercedes-Benz Axor 1829 AK with a Stratos S 60L VCLN automatic gritter and a Tarron MS 34.1 snowplough supplied by Schmidt
Equipped with all-wheel drive, the Mercedes Axor with a wheelbase length of 3900 mm has a permissible gross vehicle weight of 18 t – making it a typical snow-clearing and gritting vehicle. The automatic gritter is located on the loading area of a tipper body, meaning that the vehicle can also be used for other tasks. The powerplant develops 210 kW (286 hp) with a displacement of 6370 cc. An engine brake with a constantly-open throttle valve, ABS and differential locks at the front and rear ensure safe driving, even on slippery surfaces.
The Schmidt automatic gritter has a container capacity of six cubic metres and a 2200-litre brine tank, making it ideal for longer gritting routes. Special programs for the spreading density, spreading pattern and transverse distribution ensure efficient use of the grit. The grit is transferred to the spreader disc by means of a screw conveyor system. The Tarron snowplough attached to the mounting plate is a multi-share plough with an automatic override system. It is used predominantly in very severe winter conditions.
Mercedes-Benz Actros 2532 L with a Faun Sidepress refuse-collection body
A Faun side loader is mounted on the three-axle Actros with a permissible gross vehicle weight of 26 t. The vehicle engine, a V6 diesel powerplant, develops 235 kW (320 hp) and complies with the Euro 5 emission standard thanks to the tried-and-trusted BlueTec system, which eliminates nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas thanks to the addition of urea. A direct-injection system and a turbocharger reflect the high standard of engine technology used at Mercedes-Benz.
The Faun "Sidepress" refuse-collection body has an effective capacity of 26 cubic metres yet its kerb weight is just 13 tonnes. This compression-type refuse body is used to collect household waste in waste bins holding up to 240 litres. To make loading easier for one-man operations, the "Sidepress" is equipped with a sensor-controlled loading assistant. All the operator has to do is approach the waste bin in the vehicle until a certain mark is reached on the surveillance monitor, alleviating the need for precise docking.
Mercedes-Benz Econic 2629 L/LA with a Haller refuse-collection body
The latest version of the Econic incorporates a raft of measures aimed at making life easier for the driver and crew (including a folding door, UV film on the windscreen and side windows – to protect against solar radiation – and an increased adjustment range for the driver's seat). This version is equipped with a BlueTec diesel engine with an output of 210 kW/286 hp and a displacement of 6374 cc, which complies with the Euro 5 emission standard. One of the key components that makes the Econic so easy to use is its automatic transmission.
The three-axle vehicle on display has a permissible gross vehicle weight of 26 t and is equipped with a Haller M21 x2Ec Evo refuse-collection body. The rear loader has a collection capacity of 20.8 cubic metres for taking away bulk refuse, household waste, commercial/industrial waste and bio waste as well as paper and light fractions. The intelligent loading system adapts itself in line with the required waste fraction, while the operating pressure of the compression-type refuse body is also adjusted.
Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 20 with a Mulag MFK 400 front boom mower with an MK 1100 mower head and torsion frame as well as a low steel platform supplied by Söder
With a wheelbase length of 2700 mm, the Unimog U 20 can make full use of its outstanding manoeuvrability. As the smallest of the Unimog vehicles, it develops 110 kW (150 hp), while the implements are driven by a dual-circuit hydraulic system. Mulag developed the mower specifically for the Unimog U 20 and municipal mowing work. The front boom mower offers a cross displacement of 1500 mm and is driven by the front PTO shaft. It has a range of 5.1 metres from the vehicle centre and can be used for either left or right-hand-side operation. The boom can be swivelled diagonally forwards to improve visibility, while a torsion frame that can be locked hydraulically from the driver's area prevents sideways tilt when working with the boom at the side. Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped with a low platform supplied by Söder.
Mercedes-Benz Unimog U 20 with a Leistikow ABG 301 high-pressure cleaner and an Assaloni PAS-10 elevating work platform
This U 20 unit demonstrates the multiple uses of a Unimog: the Leistikow ABG 301 high-pressure cleaner is attached at the front, while the Assaloni PAS-10 elevating working platform is mounted behind the cab. The high-pressure cleaner attached to the front mounting plate is equipped with a high-pressure spray boom and, driven by the Unimog PTO shaft, can clean roads and squares or – if suitably equipped – unblock sewers or service lines for buildings. In this case, a water tank is carried on the platform in place of the elevating working platform. For demonstration purposes at the IFAT show, this Unimog has the Assaloni PAS-10 elevating working platform mounted instead of a water tank. This platform is suitable for a working height of up to 10 metres and can be exchanged quickly and easily.

The Unimog U 400 represents the almost limitlessly versatile and extremely high-performance implement carriers of the kind frequently used by large local authorities, road-construction departments and contractors. It features permanent all-wheel drive with a locking longitudinal (inter-axle) differential, portal axles, a rear-axle differential lock and an engine with an output of 130 kW (177 hp) and a displacement of 4297 cc. The implements are powered by the vehicle's own hydraulic system or PTO shafts.
The exhibited U 400 is an example of a dual-purpose vehicle that can be used at the end of winter and the start of spring. Behind the cab is the Stratos SFT 25 automatic gritter (with a capacity of 2.5 cubic metres and a 1210-litre brine tank), while at the front is the FSG 2000 four-blade clearance cutter (cutting thickness up to 150 mm, operating width 2000 mm) on the MFK 500 front boom (range of up to 6.0 m left and right). By way of example, this configuration allows gritting early in the morning followed by maintenance work in green areas without any interruption whatsoever. Thanks to the ISOBUS, it is extremely easy to operate the multiple implements from a single control console. A standardised (ISO) interface is used to transfer the data between the ISOBUS terminal in the cab and the implement controller on the implement. The data are stored and ready to be called up at any time. In this way, various attached and mounted implements can be controlled using one control terminal, without the need for pre-programming and without having to change the software.
Mitsubishi Fuso 7C18 Canter with a Meiller three-way tipper and Palfinger mounted crane
The Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation – the Daimler Trucks unit within Daimler AG – builds its light-duty Canter truck in Portugal. In Germany and selected other countries, it is sold through the Daimler sales organisation. The four-cylinder powerplant with an output of 132 kW(180 hp) and a displacement of 4899 cc is a common-rail engine and complies with the Euro 4 emission standard. The vehicle on show is a Canter 7C18 with a permissible gross vehicle weight of 7.5 t. The Canter is equipped with a Meiller three-way tipper and Palfinger PKG 7001 mounted crane. Even at a range of 6.7 m, it still has a lifting power of 8.5 kN and boasts a high hook height. Such combinations are frequently used by municipal works depots.
