A small glossary

Adventure comics: “Tarzan” by Hal Foster from the year 1929 is seen as the first adventure comic – stories modeled on the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Starting with the jungle epic, other themes quickly de-veloped, among them detective and Western comics. Comic authors also borrowed Science Fiction and chivalry romance from trivial literature.

Album: This is the classic form of publication for comics from France, Belgium and the Netherlands. German publishers also use this format for a major part of their stories.

Bande Dessinée: The French designation for the comic-strip (meaning ‘illustrated strip’) is exclusively used for this type of illustrated story. In Germany, by contrast, the term “comic-strip” originating from the United States has established itself as a generic term.

Comic-strip: Designation for an early form of comic-story with regular sequels of funny illustrated stories appearing in dailies. Originally, how-ever, colorfully printed comics were published in the Sunday papers. The comic-strip format was also used for the first modern comic, Rich-ard F. Outcault’s “At the Circus in Hogan’s Alley” from 1895.

Comic-book: In the first decades, comics were exclusively published in newspapers, an exception being compendiums of newspaper com-ics. Comic-books became popular in 1935 and for the first time con-tained comics which hadn’t been published elsewhere before. Super hero comics were the first genre published predominantly in the form of comic books.

Funnies: This is the oldest genre of the medium, oriented to older forms of the illustrated story and usually telling short stories with a punch line. Newspaper series frequently continue to be funnies to this day. Panel: This is the name for the individual frame of an illustration. The dynamic sequence of these panels distinguishes the comic from the caricature and the cartoon.

Semi-funnies: A comic style that combines thrilling and comical con-tents. Series from France and Belgium are typically created in the semi-funny style. They usually combine highly realistic backgrounds with burlesque, exaggerated figures.
