Over the course of the last eight years, Mercedes-Benz Canada and several of its dealers across the country have invited customers, in appreciation for their patronage, to participate in a unique amateur golf tournament competition.
From Vancouver to Halifax, approximately 10 local tournaments are hosted by individual dealers during each summer. Customers are invited to compete in three indexed categories which represent different levels of proficiency. Even novice or mid-level golfers have the opportunity to win in his or her category. Three winners from each regional tournament move on to compete in the Canadian Finals which are held at Mont-Tremblant in Quebec. The three Canadian Final winners then compete as a team on an international level in Stuttgart, Germany in the company of 23 other teams from 32 other countries from around the world.
While the final prize is awarded to the team, each participant is also measured based on his or her individual score. Canadian hockey legend Grant Fuhr, goalkeeper for the Edmonton Oilers who was instrumental in winning the Stanley Cup five times was one of the three finalists who represented Canada. A customer of Weber Motors in Edmonton, Grant finished in first place amidst the 69 participants with 70 Stableford points. His team-mate, Soon Yeap from Vancouver placed second with 69 points. Together with third team-mate Greg Galardo from Montreal, the team also won second place overall in the eclectic gross team competition which was held on the first day of the 3-day MercedesTrophy World Final.
The participants and their guests were in Stuttgart for four days; they had the opportunity to also participate in several related activities including a visit to the world-famous Mercedes-Benz Museum in Untertürkheim, a tour of the Sindelfingen car plant, and a memorable evening at the Canstatter Wasen, a German Oktoberfest festival.
Mercedes-Benz Canada’s Director Corporate Communication and Public Relations, JoAnne Caza said, “MercedesTrophy golf tournaments have welcomed more than 10,000 participants from coast to coast since they were first introduced in Canada in 1998. This successful turn-key program is offered to all Mercedes-Benz dealers as a means to show gratitude to their customers for their patronage and loyalty. The tournaments are held in first class golf venues across the country and while they are meant to be an enjoyable leisure activity, they still do have a competitive twist which includes competing in Stuttgart as part of Team Canada.”
